Snippet: “Meninas” by Maria Teresa Horta

A story collection by the poet and writer Maria Teresa Horta (Lisbon, 1937; Wikipedia). The title Meninas [Girls] reminds one of Velázquez’ painting, but in this case the portrayed are not Spanish “maids of honour” but exceptional women -mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmothers- that made (mythological) history, such as “Lilith”, “Daninha” (close to the goddess Demeter), Carlota Joaquina, Katie Lewis, Elizabeth Báthory, …
